Frederick was a bibliophile who attended carefully to his books. He published this edition of his poetry to counteract the numerous pirated copies of his works, which were often riddled with mistakes. The beautifully crafted quarto edition is illustrated by J.W. Meil and G.F. Schmidt, who were among the foremost book illustrators of their time. The publisher C.F. Voss in Berlin simultaneously issued a more modest octavo edition and a German translation. The epic poem L’Art de la guerre has six cantos and is the highlight of the volume. Its composition involved close cooperation with Voltaire, who contributed verses and refined Frederick’s style and versification.
